Main White | Create a Home Warehouse DIH Workshop Modern Paver Planter | Free and Easy DIY Project and Furniture PlansThis planter is all very beautiful and creative, I’m afraid to share mine!
Since it is still winter in Alaska, I haven’t received the 12×12 paver blocks used for landscaping at my Home Depot yet. The outside section still had a few meters of snow. So I turned to the concrete part and found 16x8x2 concrete block covers and decided to use them instead. And here I am!
Rectangular concrete pieces seemed to fit a more modern shape and love the results!
It is also surprisingly sturdy (this landscape adhesive is a real deal) and very heavy – great if you live in a windy area.
I’ve put together a quick video of all the steps – see below for more details:
A few tips to make yours easier
– Measure your blocks first and create apertures approximately 1/4 “larger to allow the landscape adhesive and blocks to slide into place.
– Use your Kreg Jig for joints, if any, to hide all screw holes
– Paint the wood before replacing the concrete
– For exterior applications, use treated or other exterior wood and use exterior paint or paint and top coat
* Home Depot, partner with blog writers like me for the DIH Workshop program. I got compensation for my time as part of this program. They did not tell me what to buy or say about any product mentioned in these articles. Home Depot believes that consumers and bloggers create their own views and share them in their own words. Home Depot’s policies are in line with the WOMMA Code of Ethics, FTC rules, and social media participation proposals.
NOTE: Measure your blocks first and set them to provide enough space for the blocks to shift into place – approximately 1/8 “- 1/4” will suffice
General instructions
Please read the entire plan and all comments before starting this project. It is also recommended to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary measures to create safely and intelligently. Work perfectly and cleanly on a clean, level surface. Always use flat boards. Check the frame after each step. Always drill the holes before installing the screws. Use a spiked glue for a stronger grip. Wipe off too glueless wood for stained projects as the dried glue will not stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!
Step 1
Fasten and glue the two side frames with pre-drilled 2-1 / 2 “deck screws or adjust your Kreg Jig for 1-1 / 2” stock and punch pocket holes and install with 2-1 / 2 “outer pocket hole screws.
The distance of the top 2×2 must be adjusted to match the width of your blocks.
Step 2
Connect the two sides with more 2×2, as you did in step 1.
Step 3
Step 4
Apply landscape glue to the board and slide the blocks into place. Use a paddle strap or rope to tie the entire project together and allow the landscape adhesive to dry overnight (follow the instructions with the landscape adhesive).
When complete, use the soil fabric to sort into the planter, add the soil and plants and enjoy!
Finishing instructions
Preparation Instructions
Fill all holes with wood filler and allow to dry. Apply additional coats of wood if necessary. When the wood filler is completely dry, sand the project with 120 grit sandpaper in the direction of the wood grain. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residues from the work surfaces. Clean the project with a damp cloth.
To ensure color uniformity and adhesion, it is always recommended to apply a test coat to a hidden area or scrap piece. Use primer or wood conditioner as required.
Is there still snow? Brrr! We just spilled on the porch that did a quikrete walk and now I need to think of something to fill! I love the look of all this (but yours is the right note for me!). We must do this … wood and concrete paver TABLES !! ?? !!
Since 2x2x8s are actually 1.5×1.5, I don’t see how 2 “concrete lids can fit into the frame and create a perfect 0.5” thick frame. This means that they need to protrude half an inch from the wooden frame to clean the corners. Do you really use 2×2 with 2 “2” thickness?
